Happy (late) valentines day <3
this year in a fleeting attempt to love myself or whatever i took some cute fun flash photos of me. i really loved how some of them turned out and lately i have been influenced by a cool graphic design technique called dithering!!!! in photography, dithering essentially just simplifies the visual data in 2 passes. so the first is limiting the color palette, usually to 256-which are what 8-bit gifs use, but for my stuff i used anywhere between 4 and 64 colors. so fun.
the second pass was choosing the actual dither method which spreads out pixels in an oversimplification that looks cool and awesome. the floyd-steinberg method (and it’s derivatives) uses neighboring pixels to make for a weird swirly effect when spreading error. I realized i have a silly little bluetooth printer that prints images onto receipt-like paper using heat, and it dithers the image in a floyd-steinberg way!!! real world application, very cool. there’s other dither methods but my favorite and what most of the images you see are passed through is the bayer method!!! this method is more pre-meditated, by adding a threshold to the color palette before dithering it. the effect is a more juxtaposed image with a twinkly effect (when you zoom in there’s a bunch of tiny “x” patterns that appear). so in other words: xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo. bayer is everything to me, lowkey. it made my ambiguous attempt to feel less obsolete on valentines day look sparkly and witchy!!!
anyways love urself and all that
